12 Product Description Examples That Convert

Twelve real before and after rewrites, one per category, each with the template underneath and the reason the second version earns the sale.

A product description converts when it answers the question that was stopping the purchase. Not when it is enthusiastic, not when it is long, and not when it contains the keyword four times.

Every example below is a before and after. The before versions are the kind of copy that fills real catalogues: supplier boilerplate, adjective stacks, and sentences that could sit on any product in the category. The after versions are shorter than you expect in some categories and longer in others, and each one is followed by the specific reason the second version does a job the first one does not.

The anatomy of a description that converts

Five parts. Not every product needs all five, and the order rarely changes.

  1. The first sentence says what it is and who it is for. This is the line that appears in search results, in a Google Merchant listing, and above the fold on a phone. If it opens with "Introducing our premium collection", the customer has learned nothing and scrolled.
  2. The specifics come next, and they are numbers. 240gsm, 18 hours, 4 mm, 32 cm, three months. Specifics are the only part of a description a competitor cannot copy without selling the same physical thing, and they are what a buyer is actually comparing.
  3. One line of benefit, tied to a specific. Not "keeps you warm", but "240gsm merino holds heat when it is damp, which is why it is the layer that works in rain".
  4. The objection you get by email. Every product has one. Does it fit over a jumper. Is it dishwasher safe. Does it work with my model. Answering it in the description is the single highest-value sentence you can write, because it is the sentence that was costing you the sale in silence.
  5. The practical close. Sizing, materials, compatibility, what is in the box, care. Bullet points, because nobody reads this part, they scan it.

Google's guidance on creating helpful content is worth reading once with a product page open. Its test is whether a reader leaves feeling they learned enough to act. On a product page, acting means buying.

12 product description examples

1. Apparel: a merino base layer

Before

Stay warm and comfortable in our premium merino wool base layer. Made from high-quality materials, this versatile piece is perfect for any adventure. Available in multiple sizes and colours.

After

A 240gsm merino base layer for cold, wet days when a synthetic layer stops working.

Merino keeps insulating when it is damp, which is the difference that matters on a long walk in the rain. At 240gsm this is the mid-weight version: warm enough for winter under a shell, too warm for a summer hike.

Flatlock seams sit flat under a pack strap. Fits close, so size up if you want to layer a fleece over it.

  • 100% merino wool, 240gsm
  • Machine wash 30 degrees, do not tumble dry
  • Model is 1.83 m and wears a medium

Why it works. The before could be any of four hundred base layers. The after names the weight, which is the number people compare, and answers the two questions that arrive by email: how warm is it, and does it run small.

2. Beauty: a vitamin C serum

Before

Our luxurious vitamin C serum brightens and revitalises your skin for a radiant, youthful glow. Formulated with the finest ingredients for all skin types.

After

A 15% L-ascorbic acid serum for uneven tone and post-acne marks. Expect visible change at six to eight weeks, not overnight.

15% is the concentration most of the research sits at. Below 10% the effect gets slow, above 20% it mostly gets more irritating.

Use it in the morning, two or three drops, before moisturiser and under sunscreen. If your skin is sensitive, start every other day.

  • 15% L-ascorbic acid, 0.5% ferulic acid, pH 3.2
  • 30 ml amber glass, use within 3 months of opening
  • Not tested on animals

Why it works. It sets a realistic timeline, which prevents the refund at week two, and it gives the concentration and pH, which is exactly what a returning buyer of this category checks.

3. Electronics: wireless earbuds

Before

Experience crystal-clear sound with our latest wireless earbuds. Featuring the newest technology and a sleek design, they are the perfect companion for music lovers everywhere.

After

Wireless earbuds with 8 hours of playback per charge and 24 more in the case, with active noise cancelling that handles engine and cabin noise rather than voices.

That is the honest limit of ANC at this price: it takes the constant low rumble out of a train or a plane, and it does not remove someone talking two seats away.

Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint pairing, so they hold a laptop and a phone at once and switch when a call comes in. IPX4, which means rain and sweat, not swimming.

  • 8 h playback, 32 h total with the case
  • USB-C, 10 minutes gives roughly 2 hours
  • Works with any Bluetooth device, no app required

Why it works. It states what the noise cancelling does not do. Saying the limit out loud is what makes the rest of the claims believable, and it is why this page gets fewer returns than the one that promised silence.

4. Home and furniture: an oak dining table

Before

Elevate your dining space with this stunning solid oak table. Expertly crafted with attention to detail, it brings warmth and elegance to any home.

After

A solid oak dining table, 180 x 90 cm, seating six comfortably and eight when everyone is friendly.

Measure the room before ordering. You want 90 cm of clear space behind each chair to walk past a seated guest, so 180 x 90 needs a room of about 360 x 270 cm to work properly.

Solid oak, not veneer, so it can be sanded and re-oiled after a decade of use. It arrives in two boxes and needs two people and about 40 minutes to assemble.

  • 180 x 90 x 75 cm, 42 kg
  • Solid European oak, natural oil finish
  • Delivered to your room of choice, packaging taken away

Why it works. The clearance calculation is the objection nobody emails about, they just do not buy. Doing the arithmetic for the customer is worth more than another paragraph about craftsmanship.

5. Food and drink: a single origin coffee

Before

Our signature blend delivers a rich, smooth taste with notes of chocolate and caramel. Sourced from the finest beans and roasted to perfection.

After

A washed Ethiopian from Yirgacheffe, roasted light, for filter rather than espresso. Bergamot and peach, with the acidity that goes with those words.

Light roast and espresso is a difficult combination, so if you are pulling shots this is not the bag to start with. In a V60 or an AeroPress it is exactly what it should be.

Roasted to order on Mondays and Thursdays, shipped the same day. Best between 7 and 30 days off roast, and the roast date is on the bag, not a best before.

  • 250 g whole bean or ground to your method
  • Altitude 1,900 to 2,100 m, washed process
  • Harvest: December 2025

Why it works. It tells a chunk of buyers not to buy this bag. That costs a few sales and prevents the review that says it tasted sour in an espresso machine, which costs more.

6. Jewellery: a gold vermeil necklace

Before

A timeless piece that adds elegance to any outfit. Handcrafted with love, this necklace is the perfect gift for someone special.

After

An 18k gold vermeil necklace on a 45 cm chain, sitting just below the collarbone on most people.

Vermeil means 2.5 microns of gold over sterling silver, which is the standard that separates it from plating. It wears far longer than plated brass, and it is not solid gold: with daily wear, expect the finish to soften over two to three years.

Hypoallergenic, because there is no nickel anywhere in it. Take it off before swimming, and keep perfume off the chain.

  • 18k gold vermeil over 925 sterling silver
  • 45 cm chain, 1.2 mm gauge, lobster clasp
  • Arrives in a gift box with a polishing cloth

Why it works. It defines vermeil. Half the buyers in this category do not know the word, and the ones who do are checking the micron figure before they trust the listing.

7. Sports: a yoga mat

Before

Our eco-friendly yoga mat provides superior grip and cushioning for all your practice needs. Non-slip surface and durable construction.

After

A 5 mm natural rubber mat with real grip in a hot class, where a PVC mat turns into a slide.

Rubber grips better the more you sweat, which is the opposite of foam. The trade-offs are honest ones: it weighs 2.4 kg, so it is a studio mat rather than a commuting mat, and it smells of rubber for about a week.

5 mm is the middle: enough padding for knees on a hard floor, still stable enough for standing balances.

  • 183 x 66 cm, 5 mm, 2.4 kg
  • Natural tree rubber, polyurethane top layer
  • Not suitable for a latex allergy

Why it works. Weight and smell are the two one-star reviews this category always gets. Putting them in the description turns two complaints into two people who chose a different mat.

8. Pet: a dog harness

Before

Keep your furry friend safe and comfortable with our adjustable no-pull harness. Perfect for walks, training and everyday adventures.

After

A no-pull harness with a front clip, for dogs that lean into a collar. Measure the chest behind the front legs, not the neck.

The front clip is what does the work: a dog that pulls turns towards you instead of forward, so the pulling stops being productive. It is a training aid, not a fix, and most dogs need a few weeks.

Four adjustment points, so it fits deep-chested breeds that a two-point harness slides on.

  • Chest 45 to 65 cm (M), 60 to 85 cm (L)
  • Padded neoprene at the chest and behind the legs
  • Two attachment points, front and back, reflective stitching

Why it works. It corrects the measurement everyone gets wrong, in the first two lines. Sizing returns are the entire cost problem in this category.

9. Auto parts: a brake pad set

Before

High-performance brake pads engineered for maximum stopping power and durability. Quality you can trust.

After

Front brake pads for the Golf Mk7 1.4 TSI, 2012 to 2020, with 288 mm discs. Check your disc diameter before ordering, because the 1.4 shipped with two sizes.

Low-metallic compound: better bite when cold than a ceramic pad, and more brake dust. If your priority is clean wheels, buy the ceramic set instead.

Wear sensor and fitting hardware included, which most sets leave out.

  • Fits: Golf Mk7 1.4 TSI 2012-2020, 288 mm front discs
  • Includes 4 pads, 1 wear sensor, shims and grease
  • Bed-in procedure in the box

Why it works. Fitment is the only thing that matters in this category, and the disc size caveat prevents the most common wrong order. Everything else is secondary.

10. Digital: a Lightroom preset pack

Before

Transform your photos instantly with our professional preset collection. Perfect for photographers of all levels.

After

24 Lightroom presets for indoor and low-light photography, where most preset packs assume daylight and fall apart.

Built and tested on raw files from full-frame and APS-C bodies. They will apply to JPEGs, and you will have less room to recover the highlights afterwards, which is true of every preset ever made.

Instant download, .xmp for Lightroom Classic and CC, plus .dng for Lightroom Mobile. One licence covers your own commercial work.

  • 24 presets, 4 categories
  • Lightroom Classic 7.3+, CC, and Mobile
  • Includes a 6-page installation guide

Why it works. A digital product has no photograph doing the selling, so the description carries everything. Naming the file formats and the version requirement removes the two reasons this gets refunded.

11. B2B and industrial: a hydraulic hose

Before

Heavy-duty hydraulic hose suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. Manufactured to the highest standards.

After

SAE 100R2AT hydraulic hose, 1/2 inch, rated to 275 bar working pressure with a 4:1 safety factor.

Two-wire braid construction for pressure lines on excavators, loaders and press equipment. Temperature range minus 40 to plus 100 degrees C for hydraulic oil, lower for water-glycol.

Sold by the metre, cut to your length, with fittings crimped to order. Give us the length between fitting faces, not the hose length.

  • SAE 100R2AT / EN 853 2SN
  • 1/2 in ID, 275 bar working, 1,100 bar burst
  • Minimum bend radius 180 mm

Why it works. B2B buyers are matching a specification, not being persuaded. Every word here is a filter that either matches their requirement or does not, and the ordering instruction prevents the most expensive mistake.

12. Bundles: a starter kit

Before

Everything you need to get started, all in one convenient bundle. Great value and perfect as a gift.

After

The three things a new sourdough baker actually runs out of buying separately: a 1.2 kg banneton, a 20 cm lame with five blades, and a dough scraper.

Bought individually these come to 47 euro. As a set, 38 euro.

The banneton is cane rather than plastic, so it wicks moisture out of the crust overnight and gives the ring pattern. It needs flouring before the first use, and the instructions are in the box.

  • 1.2 kg round banneton, 22 cm, natural cane
  • Lame with 5 replaceable blades
  • Stainless steel scraper

Why it works. It states the saving as a number and names each component with its specification. Bundles fail when the customer cannot work out whether the discount is real.

The copy and paste template

[What it is] for [who, or which situation].

[The specific that matters most in this category, as a number],
which means [the consequence for the buyer].

[The objection you get by email, answered plainly.]

- [Spec]
- [Spec]
- [Care, compatibility or what is in the box]

Four blocks. It fits a 90-word phone case and a 400-word technical component without changing shape, because what changes between categories is how much goes into block two, which is exactly the argument in how long a product description should be.

What never to write

  • Adjective stacks. "Premium, high-quality, versatile" tells a reader nothing and is on every competing page. If a sentence survives having its adjectives deleted, they were not doing anything.
  • "Introducing" and "Elevate your". Both are placeholders for a first sentence, and they cost you the line that shows up in search results.
  • The supplier's paragraph. It is on forty other stores, and it is why your page does not rank. What that costs is set out in Shopify duplicate content.
  • Anything that goes stale. Prices, stock levels, "new for spring". You will not come back and update it.
  • Keyword repetition. Once in the first sentence, once naturally later. The rest is a page that reads like it was written for a crawler because it was.
  • Claims you cannot support. In several categories, health and safety claims among them, this is a legal question rather than a style one.

That last one is also the main reason generated first drafts need a human pass rather than a spellcheck: a model will produce a warranty period, a compatibility claim or a health benefit with complete confidence and no source. The workflow that catches those before they publish is in AI product descriptions for Shopify.

How this fits with the rest of the page

The description is one of three fields, and the other two get less attention than they deserve. The meta title and meta description are what appear in the search result, they are not the same text as the description, and they have their own limits, covered in Shopify meta description length.

Underneath all of it sits your structured data. Google's product structured data documentation covers what a merchant listing can carry: price, availability, reviews, shipping and returns. Most Shopify themes emit this already, and it is worth confirming yours does, because it is the difference between a plain blue link and a result with a price and a rating on it.

FAQ

What makes a good product description? It says what the product is and who it is for in the first sentence, gives the specifics a buyer compares on as numbers, and answers the objection that arrives by email. Length matters far less than specificity.

How long should a product description be? Most sit well at 150 to 300 words. Complex or expensive products earn 400 to 600. Simple, cheap and familiar products need less than people think.

Should I use the manufacturer's description? Only as raw material. Published as-is it is the same text as every other store selling that product, so there is nothing on your page for a search engine to prefer.

How many times should a keyword appear in a product description? Once in the first sentence and once more where it fits naturally. Anything beyond that reads badly and adds nothing.

What should a product description include? What it is, who it is for, the numbers that matter in the category, one benefit tied to one of those numbers, the common objection answered, and a scannable block of specifications, sizing or compatibility.

Do product descriptions affect SEO? Yes, but indirectly. A description gives the page something unique to rank with and something for a snippet to quote. It competes with the search result title and meta description for attention, and those are separate fields.

Twelve examples is enough to see the pattern. Four hundred products is where the pattern stops being the problem, because knowing what to write and having written it are separated by about three months of evenings.

Yikfy closes that gap by working from what you already have. It reads each product's title, type, vendor, tags and current description and writes a description, a meta title and a meta description for that product, at the lengths Google displays, in the tone you set in your own prompt. You select the products, it works through them in the background, and everything lands in a review queue.

You approve what is right, edit what is close, and reject what is not. Nothing goes to your storefront until you have said so, which is the part that matters: the specifics in the examples above come from knowing your products, and reviewing the output is where that knowledge gets in.
