Paste a meta title and description and see exactly where Google cuts them. Width is measured in pixels, the way Google truncates, not in characters. Free, no sign-up, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
Google never counts characters. It renders the result and cuts it where it runs out of horizontal space, at the last whole word, then adds an ellipsis. This tool does the same: it measures your text in Arial, the typeface Google uses for results, at the sizes the pixel limits below were measured at, 20 px for the title and 13 px for the description. The title includes the store name, because Shopify themes append it to every page title and Google measures what the page outputs, not what you typed.
| Google displays | Shopify field accepts | |
|---|---|---|
| Meta title | ~600 px, roughly 55-60 characters | 70 characters |
| Meta description, desktop | ~920 px, roughly 155 characters | 320 characters |
| Meta description, mobile | ~680 px, roughly 120 characters | 320 characters |
Google has never published these limits. They are measured by the SEO community and move when Google changes its result layout, so treat them as a budget rather than a boundary and write comfortably inside them. Google may also rewrite a description it thinks matches the query badly, whatever its length.
The three sets of numbers, and why they disagree, are explained in Shopify meta description length, including where to edit the fields in the Shopify admin and what happens when you leave them blank. If you are working through a whole store rather than one page, the Shopify SEO checklist puts these fields in the order they pay back.
Yikfy writes the meta title, meta description and product description for every product you select, from each product's own data and at the lengths Google displays rather than the lengths the Shopify fields accept. Everything waits in a review queue until you approve it.
